Bienvenido a Mexíco: One month in! 🎉

I joined Wizeline remotely from Nigeria in September 2020 as Content Marketing Manager, and in October 2020, I made what I consider one of the boldest decisions of my life; to join the rest of the Wizeline Marketing team in Mexico.

The resolution stemmed from a desire to work more closely with my team in the same or similar time zone since most team members are in the Americas. A second reason was the unrest in Nigeria around the #EndSars protests, increasing my anxiety to unhealthy levels.

After travelling for over 40 hours, I finally arrived in Mexico's second-largest city, Guadalajara (GDL), on the 31st of May. I've been in GDL for one month, but I still get those random moments in my day where I can't believe I really got up and moved over 7000 miles away from where I've called home for more than 20 years. From not speaking nearly enough Spanish to having travellers diarrhea in my first couple of days here, the move has been just as dramatic as it sounds.

Nevertheless, I love it here. In the past month, I got the essentials (a house, bank accounts, etc.) out of the way, and now I’m focusing on embracing the Mexican culture in all its forms. I'm getting used to the beautiful architecture, seeing dogs 🐶  everywhere (I'm fully convinced Mexican dogs get the best treatment), eating lots of fajitas and chilaquiles, and drinking some delicious Tequila🍹.

I've also made some new friends, honourable mention to my hermosa amiga, Leslie. We work together on the Marketing Team at Wizeline, and she's honestly the best friend I can ask for as I settle down in an unfamiliar country.

Over the next couple of months, I plan to speak better Spanish, try more Mexican dishes, make new friends (if you’re ever on this side, feel free to tweet at me!), visit touristy destinations, and immerse myself deeper in the Mexican culture.

Ultimately, this move would also help me better understand my company's cultural nuances, making me an even more valuable contributor to my team.

I plan to write more about my experience here, so stay tuned for a three-month update? 🤔 We'll see.
